To protect habitats and ecosystems of Northwest Indiana through acquiring, restoring, and protecting environmentally significant landscapes for present and future generations, and to inspire and educate people of all ages about the value of land conservation to protect our natural world and enrich our lives.
Shirley Heinze Land Trust has been protecting natural areas since 1981. Currently, we manage nearly 2,300 acres in Lake, Porter, La Porte and S. Joseph counties. Our preserves include examples of the unique spectrum of natural communities in this region: tallgrass prairie, high dune, oak savanna, boreal flatwoods, dune-and-swale, woodlands, marshes, swamps, ponds, fens, and riparian habitat. Five of our nature preserves are Indiana State Nature Preserves. Gifts will be utilized to enhance the Shirley Heinze Land Trust mission: To protect habitats and ecosystems of Northwest Indiana through acquiring, restoring, and protecting environmentally significant landscapes for present and future generations, and to inspire and educate people of all ages about the value of land conservation to protect our natural world and enrich our lives.
