The mission of the Y is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
The Y has been serving our community for 108 years. During this time, we have worked to meet our community’s needs in many ways, including: • Opening our doors to all La Porte County youth during the Great Depression; • Adding pool and gym space to help residents meet their health and fitness goals; • Providing childcare, before/after school care and summer day camp our community's children; • Offering swim lessons to help children and adults safely enjoy our community's lakes; and • Helping kids get active through our soccer, basketball, cross country, track and other sports programs. The Y operates with the philosophy of charging fees to those who have the ability to pay, and helping those who don’t. Our scholarship fund helps us ensure that everyone in our community can participate in life-changing Y programs. The La Porte Family YMCA Fund supports children and families in the La Porte service area. Please consider making a contribution to help us build a stronger community!
Last summer, our Y staff met a new camper named Dax, who suffers from a seizure disorder. His mom said although it had been a year since his last seizure, that could change at any time so their family is always on alert. Dax's condition also requires him to take medicine that affects his impulse control, so he worries somewhat about fitting in. Despite these challenges, Dax is a terrific kid who acts like any other kid his age. His mom and our staff worked together to offer him the best possible summer camp experience. He was able to participate fully in all activities and field trips. Dax was happy and excited to be at camp every day. When asked why he liked camp so much, Dax said, “Because it’s fun and I got to meet new cool people and make new friends and I love playing Gaga Ball.” He appreciated the camp staff treating him like everyone else and providing him with a sense of normalcy. We are very glad that we were able to help provide Dax with an amazing camp experience!
