The Mission of The Dunes Arts Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is to build a renowned professional, non-equity, self-sustaining, regional theatre that provides high-quality performing and fine arts productions that inspire audiences while stimulating local commerce and promoting community spirit.
The Dunes Arts Foundation is raising funds for much needed structural improvements at the theatre (built in 1941). These improvements include required electrical re-wiring; rebuilding the dance studio; installing a new roof on the outdoor pavilion; and revitalizing the grounds. These projects will bring the facility up to code and provide much needed space for our revamped children's programs (which were once a mainstay at the theatre and an international destination), and fund our youth and summer internship programs.
In 2017 a new business-minded board of directors recognized the potential of The Dunes Summer Theatre, a 272 seat theatre nestled on 19 acres in the woods. This team had new lights installed; rehabbed 8 cabins for actors/interns; installed new plumbing, heat and air conditioning; eradicated mold, mildew, and bats; added drainage systems; fixed leaks, painted and cleaned. We also introduced a new website with an online ticketing system. In May of 2017, the community re-discovered the Dunes Summer Theatre with 6 strong plays featuring actors from the community and region. The Theatre received great praise and reviews from the audience and press. It was named a top 10 regional theatre in Indiana by AmericanTowns Media. The Dunes will prove to be a strong economic force in the community benefiting restaurants, stores, gas stations, banks, airports and hotels, thereby assisting in the revitalization efforts of the community.
